Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell applied

I thought I was done tonight. I suppose you’ll have to deal with one more political meandering from yours truly.

Wounded gay soldier wants to remain in military. Discharges. Oddly, receives a “purple” heart for his injuries. A purple heart? How gay is that?!?!? I should note, the article says the soldier opted for the discharge because his presence would conflict with the military’s discriminatory “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. So, the military didn’t kick him out, though I don’t doubt their probable intentions.

To be fair to the military, perhaps the dude used “don’t ask, don’t tell” to get out of service, even though he said he wanted to remain. I think you have to play devil’s advocate in a situation like this.

Although, with recruitment numbers a bit down, I don’t think the military should really be getting picky about a few gays and lesbians who want to serve their country.

Old enough to die, old enough for rye

One Republican I’m agreeing with is Wisconsin State Rep. Mark Pettis, who believes the drinking age for Wisconsin soldiers should be lowered to 19. And I agree wholeheartedly.

Much like the whole Vietnam-era issue of soldiers not being able to vote if they were under 21, I find it highly offensive that we can send these young kids off to war, but they can’t even drink a goddamn beer (which doesn’t mean they don’t. I’m sure there are plenty of underage soldiers in Iraq partaking in some of the precious brew). I have no problem with it. Screw Mothers Against Drunk Driving. They can go fight the war. Where’s Mothers Against Amputated Vets?

Sure, it may cause some problems with Full Faith and Credit, but I don’t care. Kids can drive at 16, but can’t see an R-rated film until 17 or an X-rated one until 18. Kids can go to war at 18, but not drink until 21. There are plenty of holes in my argument, but I’ve been typing all night and I don’t care.

I think this would be a great incentive and recruiting tool for the military. I say make it the law of the land. Join up with the military and you can drink at 19. The soldiers aren’t getting proper armor and protection, so at least let them drink those pains away.

My summer reading list just got REAL long

I guess I don’t have much inspiration tonight, seeing as how I’m taking all my post ideas from other sites.

Again, Feministe brings to my attention something neat: A recently-released list of the Ten Most Harmful Books of the 19th and 20th Centuries, compiled by conservative mag Human Events. Such expected “delights” as The Communist Manifesto and The Kinsey Report are listed among the top 10, though the more interesting choices are listed beyond.

Honorable mentions include Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring as well as some selections from Charles Darwin. How odd they chose Carson’s book, seeing how it was a thoughtful and honestly researched book on the effects of the chemical DDT, the banning of which many believe has saved more than 500 million lives.

Update I: I fucked up when I skimmed through this article. I mistook and thought the doctor was against the DDT. I should’ve known, seeing as the article was originally published by Newsmax. Thanks to Hube for pointing out this HUGE error. I should’ve just stuck with Carson’s thesis (perhaps THESIS is the key word) that DDT pollution fucks up the food chain. On a more personal note, I was required to read Carson’s book for my Environmental Reporting course a few years back. I did enjoy it BECAUSE of her reliance on personal and scientific research to back up some of her hypotheses. I suppose the final thought that can be made is that DDT can both cause and prevent mass death. Thanks, Hube, for catching my severe eff up.

Update II: I have to admit I fell into the environmentalist trap I’ve tried to avoid ever since seeing an episode of Penn & Teller’s Bullshit! in which they attack crazy environmentalists for signing petitions to ban “dihydrogen oxide,” or, water. Funny stuff. So, I came across this article from reason.com talking about the good things DDT has been responsible for over the past 50 years (when it hasn’t been banned). Read it. I adjusted my opinion slightly. All I know is I keep my Off! in hand when I go on hikes. If it gives me cancer, oh well.

Continuation of original post…

Time Magazine profiled Carson in a 1999 issue, saying:

Carson was violently assailed by threats of lawsuits and derision, including suggestions that this meticulous scientist was a “hysterical woman” unqualified to write such a book. A huge counterattack was organized and led by Monsanto, Velsicol, American Cyanamid - indeed, the whole chemical industry - duly supported by the Agriculture Department as well as the more cautious in the media.

What a shocker. Corporate interests attempt to impugn the character of a woman simply because it may hurt their bottom line. A woman who did her research and found DDT to be an unacceptable chemical with unacceptable impacts on animal and plant life ’round the world. Sadly, that research may have been the cause of her death of breast cancer in 1964. What could the conservative dodos on Human Events POSSIBLY have against Carson’s book? Oh, yeah. She was, reportedly, a lesbian.

And, if these books are so dangerous, why does Human Events so freely link to Amazon.com in the books’ respective blurbs? I suppose, dangerous or not, the loveable wingnuts over there really are looking out for the capitalist interests of the good ‘ole U.S. of A.!

More on Tillman

A lot of “mores” tonight. As I’ve previously written on these topics, I suppose it’s rather fitting.

Via Feministe I read Robert Scheer’s latest column in the LA Times.

I love Scheer. He’s just the firebrand liberal, who-gives-a-shit kind of guy I like when it comes to opinions. And he gets it right. As I said last week I feel the whole Pat Tillman tragedy was an opportune time for the military in general, and the Bush administration in particular, to pass along a series of political propaganda disguised as heroics on the part of Tillman, who had actually been killed by friendly-fire from his fellow soldiers.

Another quote, this time from Tillman’s father, pulled from Scheer’s article:

“They blew up their poster boy,” Tillman’s father, Patrick, a San Jose lawyer, told the Washington Post last week. He joined his former wife to demand accountability for the latest military cover-up to happen on Commander in Chief Bush’s watch. High-ranking Army officials, he said, told “outright lies.”

Can this plot thicken any more? Of course! This is the US military we’re talking about:

“After it happened, all the people in positions of authority went out of their way to script this,” Tillman said. “They purposely interfered with the investigation …. I think they thought they could control it, and they realized that their recruiting efforts were going to go to hell in a handbasket if the truth about his death got out.”

I mean, this is the same military that tried to turn Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch “into some kind of Rambo figure,” as Scheer puts it.

I love Scheer’s closing:

For the Tillmans, as with Pfc. Lynch and the 9/11 widows, the path to true patriotism means confronting your government when it lies.

Check out the gals at Feministe. Some nice stuff going on over there. And they’re pretty easy on the eyes.

More on Iraq

Roxanne over at Rox Populi has some interesting ruminations on the Iraq War. I agree, somewhat, with her “establish an oligarchy” charge. And, again, the Downing Street Memo, surprisingly untouched by the “liberal” US media, is mentioned in her post.

For those of you who haven’t visited, her blog is pretty hilarious. In particular, her parody of Michelle Malkin had me nearly pissing my pants.

OK, so some of you may not know what NSFW means. I suppose I’m here to tell you it means “not safe for work.” So, beware launching the following website.

Check out this hilariously inventive music video featuring clips from The Silence of the Lambs. Listen closely to the lyrics.

“We puts the lotion on our skin, or else we gets the hose again.” Classic.

Thoughts of a mother

As an independent liberal I try to stay away from such harsh rhetoric adopted by both sides of the political aisle. Yes, I love Michael Moore and his movies, books and TV shows. However, I don’t often cite him as a source of political inspiration in my life. I think he’s quite ostentatious at times and I consider him the left’s version of Ann Coulter. Basically a guy who spouts our liberal talking points ad nauseum so as to give me a headache every now and then. I certainly love his courage, but there’s only so much I can take.

But, I will gladly present to you this letter written by a grieving mother of a dead Iraqi soldier, as presented on Moore’s website. A soldier whose birthday was today, Memorial Day.

Check it out

I could write a really lengthy review of a really great film I saw Friday night. But I’ll let you guys do the talking. Anyone seen Crash yet? Wow, what a powerful and stunning commentary on the state of race relations in our country today. No one comes away unscathed in this one. Black or white. Quite uncomfortable to sit through at times, but excellent nonetheless.

I highly recommend it to all who haven’t seen it. For such a (relatively) cheaply made film, it’s doing quite impressively at the box office. At a time when most films don’t make it past two or three weeks in the top ten, it’s held out for a month. This really is a word of mouth movie, though. Even my totally apolitical and party-hard cousin recommended it to me, having seen it opening night.

So check it out and let me know what you think.

Monstrously annoying results

Jesus. After just 24 hours of having posted my resume on Monster.com I’ve received five emails and two phone calls soliciting my services. To which I say: Oh my! The emails seem to be mostly stupid jobs, like the ones promising you’ll make $5000 a week working at home. I received two calls on my cell phone, which definitely isn’t cool. I’ll just have to change the phone number on Monster.

I think the phone calls were from head hunters, as they seemed more interesting in discussing my employment history and what I’d like to get from a job as opposed to actually offering or soliciting a position. One of the guys called from the insurance industry. I was already ticked that he called my cell phone (my fault, I realize), but then he asked if I was interested in working in the insurance field again and I curtly replied “no.”

Anyhow, posting my resume on Monster was more of an experiment to see what would happen. I’m definitely surprised. There is one position out there I’m going to try to get. Not gonna talk prematurely about it, but it sounds like an interesting find.

Just a bit shocked

Via Hube I discovered this test. I’m not usually into these dime-a-dozen quizzes, but this looked interesting, though I do take its results with a grain of salt.

I’m actually shocked to find I’m so conservative, though I do fault some of the questions asked. Plus, a question like “Some people have less luck than others” is pretty stupid, though I do understand its political implications.

So, what the heck are you?

Human rights and wrongs

Courtest of amnesty.org

Amnesty International today released its Report 2005, which addresses the host of human rights violations that occured around the world in 2004.

Not surprisingly, as this AP article details, Amnesty International is still pissed off about the secretive goings-on at the Guantanamo Bay prison, where hundreds of suspected Afghani terrorists have been since the start of the Afghanistan conflict in October 2001.

I use the word “suspected” because these idiots have been neither tried nor convicted of any crime. The United States is using some cockamamie canard like “national security” as a reason to keep these men locked up without justified cause. Do I think these nuts are crazy Islamic fanatics out to kill us all? Well, yes I do. I believe most of the men probably are guilty. So why not try and fry these bitches? I’m not a pro-death penalty guy, but as I’ve said these past couple of years, I’d gladly pull the trigger on any shithead looking to harm innocent Americans in terrifyingly filthy terror attacks.

In its report, Amnesty equates the Guantanamo affair to the old gulags of Soviet-yesteryear. Not knowing what these pleasant accomodations were, I did some searching and came up with this link, as provided by our handy-dandy Library of Congress.

Gulags:

Conditions in the camps were extremely harsh. Prisoners received inadequate food rations and insufficient clothing, which made it difficult to endure the severe weather and the long working hours; sometimes the inmates were physically abused by camp guards. As a result, the death rate from exhaustion and disease in the camps was high.

Gulags were home to criminals during the Communist Soviet-regime 50 years ago. As the site says, political dissidents were often sent there without charge or cause. Which brings me to my point about Guantanamo. As the news article states:

[S]ome 540 men are held on suspicion of links to Afghanistan’s ousted Taliban regime or the al-Qaida terror network. Some have been jailed for more than three years without charge.

Held on suspicion??? Well, I wish the damn police would arrest the plastic-bag lady who walks the streets of Wilmington, Del. I know that bitch must be building a bomb or something.

Usual PR-blather came out of Scott McClellan’s mouth at today’s White House press briefing. Monkey-boy said Amnesty’s complaints were “ridiculous and unsupported by the facts.” Yeah, and a White House press secretary has never bullshitted (shat?) about anything these past couple of administrations.

Dumbass of the Day award goes to the dipshit at the Department of Defense who released this statement:

[T]he detention of enemy combatants is not criminal in nature, but to prevent them from continuing to fight against the United States in the War on Terrorism.

Does this even justify a response? They’re not criminals, but keep them locked up? At least have the balls to say they’re criminals. Even my bleeding heart would give the government some credit if they’s disengage their bungholes from the spin machines to which they’re so accustomed.

See also: Columbia University College Democrats blog.

More liberal filth like mine: Left in the Reign offers up an opinion.

Feministe.com gives us a critical perspective, to which I agree:

A true culture of life is one that does not perpetuate a rule of law that says human rights only matter in times without conflict. One cannot fight terrorism as it is currently defined with bombs, tanks, guns, and prisons. If one wants to reduce terrorist acts, state-sponsored or not, one must first look to the root causes: racism, ethnocentrism, xenophobia, misogyny, invisibility, strict fundamentalism, limited resources, lack of educational opportunity, economic hardship, the spirit of revenge, and the desire for complete consolidation of power.

Conservative balance: The Political Teen offers his opinion.

I’ve previously posted some Amnesty International-related thoughts here.

Update I: Hube’s got something to say.

Expensive touchdowns

Joanne Jacobs reports on an astoundingly expensive number of high school football stadiums to be built in Texas. The news article details the plan to build 23 state-of-the-art stadiums in the “Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio” areas.

From the article:

Hence the separate locker rooms for each team’s offensive and defensive squads; the three-story, $900,000 instant-replay scoreboard; the spacious two-level press box; and the glass wall separating the athletics staff offices, trophy hall and banquet room from the north end zone.

Wow is all I can say. One town, Denton, has already spent a whopping $20.5 million on its new high school stadium.

Now, I refuse to be one of those crazy idealists who believes that money should only be spent towards educational goals and materials, while sports should be deemphasized. But, isn’t this a bit much? $20.5 MILLION on a new HIGH SCHOOL stadium?

Aren’t these Texas yahoos the ones who want less taxation? I suppose when it comes to their beer-drenched Friday nights, they’d rather be watching a high school football game instead of going out tipping cows and screwing their goats and cousins. < /sarcasm>

One commenter on Jacobs’ site, Eric Holcombe, makes some good sense:

With 12,000 seats, 7 home games a year (all sold out) they only need to charge about $180 per ticket (plus interest) to pay this off in 20 years. This is assuming that concessions pay for the upkeep of the place. A $4/ ticket sellout of one game exceeds their advertising revenue. Where is the rest of the dough coming from to justify this? Must be nice skyboxes.

That’s a whole lot of peanuts and pork rinds. They’d better hop-to.

On twisted uteri and flashing boobs

Just got back from another hilarious live-taping of The Hott Spott. Remember, Delawareans: Monday nights, 10:30, Channel 73. Sorry to all you mf’ers with satellite.

Anyhow, Jay spent the first half of the show talking about a woman he, um, messed up down there (read the title of this post). He brought an x-ray to prove it. Meanwhile, poor Amie continued to deflect requests from callers to flash her boobs for the horny male audience (and some females, I’m sure) at home (and in the studio, hehe).

Also performing were some local rappers. One caller commented: “Man, I wrap better at Christmas than these two fools.” How punny. However, the rapper at the end of the show, a gentleman named Nefarious Black, threw down some good beats and rhymes. I’m no rap music fan, but he was pretty darn good.

I think I’m gonna need to start taking notes. Maybe even LIVE-BLOG every week. That’d be fun. Anyhow, Emmy and I are going back next week. I believe I’m bringing on some interesting friends who may actually step in front of the camera for your viewing pleasure.

NOTE: I’ve given The Hott Spott its OWN category to the right. If you want to read everything I’ve written about them, just click the link and it will bring up all those respective posts.

Aiding the enemy!

You all remember the story of Pat Tillman, the soldier who turned down a career in professional football to serve our country in Afghanistan. Well, his death last year was blamed on enemy fire, though the Army just admitted several weeks ago Tillman’s death was from friendly fire.

The Army lying about Tillman’s death was military propaganda disguised as a moment of patriotic pride. They painted a picture of a hero “storming a hill [and] barking orders to his fellow Rangers,” when in fact he had been fired upon and killed erroneously by his brothers in arms.

Read this article detailing the Tillman family’s critical comments directed at the US Army.

From the article:

In separate interviews in their home town of San Jose and by telephone, Tillman’s parents, who are divorced, spoke about their ordeal with the Army with simmering frustration and anger. A series of military investigations have offered differing accounts of Tillman’s death. The most recent report revealed more deeply the confusion and disarray surrounding the mission he was on, and more clearly showed that the family had been kept in the dark about details of his death.

I’m sitting back waiting for the inevitable conservative response eviscerating the Tillman family for daring to be so critical of our military. It’s gotta come soon.

Who will be first? Michelle Malkin? Captain Ed? Or will they not even comment?

To think this ungrateful family would want to get some truth out of our totally open and honest military bureaucracy! These unpatriotic fools! How dare they question the military’s intentions.

Rich jokes

A film I’m highly anticipating this summer is The Aristocrats, a documentary about the most flexibly dirty joke in the history of comedy.

New York Times columnist Frank Rich penned an excellent piece on the film’s star joke. He also talks about a comedy roast of Playboy’s Hugh Hefner several weeks after 9/11 and the craziness comedian Gilbert Gottfried brought to the roast. As unnecessary and totally wrong as it was, who could not briefly giggle at such an obnoxious joke, as cited from Rich’s column:

[Gottfried] couldn’t get a direct flight to California, he said, because “they said they have to stop at the Empire State Building first.”

Insensitive? Possibly. Politically incorrect? You betcha. Damn funny? Oh yeah.

In the piece, Rich chastises Americans who are a bit loose with the whole PC-relativism thing. In short, Rich says, and I agree, he believes that many are quick to judge things as too politically correct in this country, though they got all uppity and pissed off when a politically incorrect Bill Maher had this to say in the days after 9/11:

We have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That’s cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it’s not cowardly.

Oops, he got a bit too politically incorrect (funny, wasn’t that the name of his show?) for some conservatives (minus Debbie Schlussel, who wrote a great piece defending Maher), who called for Maher’s head. Conservatives are quick to label something as PC-hooey when it comes to such issues as education, race, and the media. However, tell a naughty joke on the air, and you’re likely to be boycotted by the moral-superiority Christian-right.

So, The Aristocrats is totally dirty and politically incorrect. But how will conservatives interpret it?

Sagged and bagged

Do I have a problem with the photos of Saddam in his skivvies? No, not really. My only complaint is the way it’s dictated the news cycle the past 24 hours. Let’s move on, please.

So everyone –including Saddam– stop whining about his rights being violated. Saddam’s got about a million other charges on his hands without having to worry about the idiot that leaked the photos.

The pictures are stupidly goofy and I’m sure Rupert Murdoch and his bastion of news hacks are having a field day. Let them have their sensationalist fun.

The Gooch over at Hube’s Cube got it right, though I disagree with the marginalization of and comparison to the Abu Ghraib prison mess.

The Passion of the Brent

The invaluable Crooks and Liars relays a review of [Give ‘em hel]L. Brent Bozell’s Media Research Center done by the CJRDaily. (OK…I realize there are one too many proper pronouns in that sentence. Cohesion and clarity aren’t my strong suit tonight.)

And what a tasty review it is.

In particular, the CJR (Columbia Journalism Review) piece details how Bozell’s MRC seems more intent on dictating and degrading all news coverage as having a particular slant; in Bozell’s case a heavily liberal slant.

From the CJR report:

Underlying every assertion by MRC, on the other hand, is the notion that the media are consciously and deliberately acting to distort the news, thanks to an overriding and all-consuming ideological bias. But because MRC is so insistent on pushing its overreaching and not-so-hidden ideological agenda, reasonable people have a hard time taking it seriously, even when the organization has a legitimate point to make. That’s because, at its heart, MRC doesn’t exist to make the media better — it’s just one part of a wider movement by the far right to demonize corporate media.

Crooks and Liars –and, to a lesser extent, the CJR report– continues this thesis in wondering why MRC’s liberal counterpart, Media Matters for America, isn’t offered some time to respond to their often ridiculous charges on major news outlets.

My problem with the MRC is that it seems more intent in outlining an agenda rather than exposing some true bias and wrongdoing on part of the media.

Say what you will about the liberals behind Media Matters; its politics are no where near as overtly up-front and center as Bozell’s organization. Though it tends to expose conservative misdoings in the media, Media Matters, to my recollection, has never thrown around a worn-and-torn “conservative media” label. They present factual errors as reported by various news organizations. And then they back them up with appropriate video and audio clips as well as the facts to set the record straight.

Though it seems self-serving, Media Matters has its own report of the MRC.

Where do I stand on this? I don’t buy any of the rhetoric on either side. I continue to refute all claims of the alleged “liberal media” bias so effectively disseminated throughout the conservative blogosphere. Likewise, I don’t buy “conservative media” bias claims from liberals, either. Because, depending on anyone’s political perspectives, a news article can be viewed and skewed any which way you choose. The same “liberal media” that caused the NEWSWEEK craziness is the same “conservative media” that has refused to pick up the Downing Street Memo report. Simple as that.

Slice it and dice it as you see fit.
