WDEL had a fascinating announcement today. Syndicated gabber Sean Hannity, who once held the 3-6 pm time slot, has been booted after some nasty contractual fighting. According to station program manager Rick Jensen, Hannity’s syndicate, ABC Radio, demanded that WDEL carry ANOTHER of its syndicated programs or else they would pull Hannity. Jensen says he and other station management were unwilling to fire other employees/on-air personalities and are quite pleased with the Live and Local angle the station has taken over the last year.
So they got rid of Hannity. And not a day too soon. I’ve been lobbying this for months, casually dropping hints for months when in the presence of Jensen. I realize carrying Hannity likely meant tons of dough for the station and I’d bet it was its highest-rated program, but Jensen and crew have made a bold and courageous move of really going full-time with the local thing.
According to Jensen, Gerry Fulcher will occupy the 3-4 pm slot and local news guru/god Allan Loudell will be taking over from 4-6 with an awesome amount of news coverage.
Good going WDEL! If you ever need some more live and local, you know where to reach me!
