Bye bye to buffoon Hannity

WDEL had a fascinating announcement today. Syndicated gabber Sean Hannity, who once held the 3-6 pm time slot, has been booted after some nasty contractual fighting. According to station program manager Rick Jensen, Hannity’s syndicate, ABC Radio, demanded that WDEL carry ANOTHER of its syndicated programs or else they would pull Hannity. Jensen says he and other station management were unwilling to fire other employees/on-air personalities and are quite pleased with the Live and Local angle the station has taken over the last year.

So they got rid of Hannity. And not a day too soon. I’ve been lobbying this for months, casually dropping hints for months when in the presence of Jensen. I realize carrying Hannity likely meant tons of dough for the station and I’d bet it was its highest-rated program, but Jensen and crew have made a bold and courageous move of really going full-time with the local thing.

According to Jensen, Gerry Fulcher will occupy the 3-4 pm slot and local news guru/god Allan Loudell will be taking over from 4-6 with an awesome amount of news coverage.

Good going WDEL! If you ever need some more live and local, you know where to reach me!

[Partly] replacing buffoon Hannity with a bigger buffoon — Fulcher??

Seriously, the local angle is all well and good, but I hope they survive it financially.

  2. Hube says:

BTW, that’s a cool feature — noting the most prolific commenters. I got some work to do to surpass that biyatch Susan!

  3. G Rex says:

I gotta give Pete Booker mad props for telling WABC to shove it up their asses, but I just can’t take an hour of undiluted Fulcher. He’s a smug, arrogant, obnoxious, opinionated jerk - the embodiment of everything I hate about New York and its vile inhabitants. You know, Yankee fans.

The Jensen show used to run a full 3 hours before they gave Loudell his 12:00 gig, why couldn’t they go back to that? I’ll be switching to WPHT (thebigtalker1210.com) to listen to Hannity from now on, thank you very much. You may think he’s a buffoon, Mike, but he gets better guests than anyone, whereas Rush only likes the sound of his own voice.

Actually, I used to switch off WDEL at 3 anyway to listen to 98 Rock, but then they moved Mickey & Amelia to morning drive.

  4. Hube says:

I used to switch between Hannity and WIP’s Howard Eskin depending on, as Rex said, who Hannity had as a guest. Now it’ll be exclusively Eskin, depending on how well WPHT comes in…

  5. Susan says:

Hannity is only supassed in the sucking contest by twin blowhards Rush Limbaugh and Howard Eskin. Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say, and I hope the door didn’t hit Hannity in the ass as he left. WDEL can only get better with him gone.

  6. Susan says:

BTW, Hube, you can post as often as you like, but that won’t make you more interesting…

  7. Al says:

I listened to Hannity when he first started with ‘DEL but I soon lost interest in him. I’ve been mostly conservative or middle of the road for as long as I’ve been old enough to vote but I’ve never been able to get into these conservative talk show hosts. I believe Limbaugh ruined it for me with his school-boy economics and totally uncompromising position on everything right-wing. Hannity was a Limbaugh wannabe who comes across better but is still uncompromising. Mike Gallagher was on WILM but he’s certainly the worst of the three. He should go back to baseball umpiring because he couldn’t have been worse at it than he was in running a radio program.

I will not miss Shamnity. Me: GOP-yes, ShamnityGOP - hell no.

Better yet, Mike, look….I FINALLY MADE IT TO YOUR SITE!!!!

Your layout sucks. KIDDING! You’re going to put me back in IP-hop hell again, aren’t you?

  9. Joe M says:

I can’t say I’m sorry to hear that Hannity is leaving, since I never could listen to him for more than a couple of minutes. I am interested to see how Fulcher can hold his own show, though. Jensen’s going to have to get him all worked up during Rick and Ger.

  10. jason says:

Hannity on WDEL was “exhibit A” in the case I was building against Pete Booker being a right-wing stooge dedicated to a making this Republican/fascists takeover of our government permanent.

    Back to the drawing board.

Fulcher is an alleged dirty ex-cop from NY. When he asks a favor of a politician and is denied, he turns on the politician. The only radio show that Fulcher should be let out of his cage for is one in which the corrupt ex-cop begs forgiveness for his many misdeeds.

  12. jason says:

    Point of order Mr. Chairman:

Fulcher is not an alleged dirty ex-cop from NY. He is an admitted ex-dirty cop from NY.

  13. Nancy Willing says:

WDEL should think about hiring Mike Matthews for their 3-5 slot.

  14. miscreant says:

Only if he would share the air with you, for “ideological balance”. I’d be a faithful listener.

  15. Jay says:

Ack! I have no competition when it comes to sucking contests! Damn fools thinking they have something on me.

  16. anon says:

I’ve tried listening to WDEL cause i want to support a station with a local angle, but damn its nothing but one full force spewing of advertisements. Yesterday I tried listening in as much as possible and it was 99% ads with traffic and weather in between, thanks but I already realized it was foggy.

  17. donviti says:

you realize that by putting the prolific commenters people like Pube are going to comment more?

  18. Hube says:

If you actually learned to write, dimwitty, perhaps you could do as well as us “prolifics”!

Keep the chin up, young man! It can happen some day!!

I thought I heard this on the radio today!

I have no doubt that Mike and I would kick butt on WDEL, my secret dream job.

  21. MarkLevinFan says:

I find it amazing that nobody has mentioned the fact that rival talk station, WILM, has picked up both Sean Hannity and the other syndicated program, Mark Levin! This bold, courageous move by WDEL will cause their ratings to tank while WILM’s ratings will go through the roof!

I’m looking forward to listening to the Mark Levin Show on WILM starting January 15 from 10 pm. to 12 am. EST!

  22. Mike Matthews says:

So it was Mark Levin’s shitty program that ABC Radio was shoving WDEL to accept? Too bad ML’s program is on so late at night. I’ll be looking forward to the much-deserved sleep I’ll be getting as opposed to listening to that dreck.

  23. Hube says:

Let’s see … Gerry Fulcher vs. Mark Levin? You’re kidding, right Mike?

Would WDEL have had to run it at that 10pm timeslot? If so, I fail to see why they didn’t accept the deal.

Well, hot damn, that’s exciting! Oh, um, by the way, got any paint I can watch dry? I’m looking to live on the edge now with all this excitement about WILM getting back off of their carrier current format.

    Hube says:

I doubt it. I don’t think they were local at that time anyway…were/are they? I don’t know. I doubt that a 10PM demand would have broke a deal. Probably should look at ABC syndicated shows (and schedules) to figure this out…but who really cares? I don’t. Shamnity is too intolerant.

  25. G Rex says:

I just love how all the lefty response to the WDEL re-jiggering treats the Hannity show’s departure as if it were an editorial decision rather than a business decision. The only question is how long it will take them to run out of local news - Delaware may be interesting, but not 8 hours a day of interesting! Oh, and now the queen moonbat Liz Allen has another show to call twice a week.

Hey Mike, thanks for hipping Fulcher to my critique of him, I was stunned and amazed to hear him read it word for word on the air! I feel obligated to shoot you that e-mail now.

  26. jason says:

G has a point. That is why they need an hour a day of bloggers calling out all the frauds and losers that the NJ is scared to call out.

  27. Hube says:

jason may be on to something! Wouldn’t it be cool if WDEL devoted at least an hour to a show called “Blog Talk” which various local bloggers could co-host each day? We could all attend whenever we’re free.

  28. G Rex says:

Reverend! Dunno about “Blog Talk” though, how about “The Usual Suspects?” I’ll suggest it to Pete Booker the next time I see him.

Hey Jason, I was out of the office for the past week or so, and never gave you due props for your Blogger Challenge during the food drive. I just had to contribute after hearing that, but since I don’t have my own blog it didn’t count towards the DelBlog total. Consider props now bestowed, sorry for the delay.

  29. Hube says:

Whatever name you use — but I say let’s lobby for that idea!! A rotating bunch of bloggers would be a lot more interesting and exciting than listening to Al, Rick and Ger each and every day exclusively (no offense, well, except for Gerry!).
