Inept, Indeed

Yesterday Laura Bush made a rare appearance in the White House press room to slam the Myanmar government and military for their miserable handling of the aftermath of a tragic cyclone that has taken an estimated 15,000 lives. Among other things, Mrs. Bush accused the government of having “blood on their hands” and being “very inept”. And she should know.

January 20, 2009, will be a great day for our country and the world. As happy as I am to see George W. Bush leave office and his reign of mayhem come, mercifully, to an end, I am equally happy to be rid of his dear, sweet wife.

For eight years I have listened to the media fawn over that woman. Phrases like “everybody loves Laura Bush” and “Laura Bush’s approval numbers are very high” and “popular First Lady Laura Bush” make me fume. Who loves her? Why are her approval numbers high? Why is she popular? Who are these people that are being surveyed?!?!

I would be interested to see the gender breakdown of each survey taken on Laura Bush. I can’t imagine that her approval numbers among women is as high as it is among men. Ripped from a scene of Leave It to Beaver, she is weak, vapid, and meek. If I close my eyes, I can see her vacuuming the White House carpets in her pumps, pearls and form-fitting wool dress; virtually every man’s dream.

Laura Bush has accomplished next to nothing of substance in her life and her alleged popularity has set the women’s movement back 40 years. She appears to hold no opinion of her own; she’s perfectly happy to nod – eyes firmly focused in headlights – and agree with whatever her husband says. I doubt she’s had an original thought in years. How could anyone – especially any woman – respect that? Her voice is as soft and quavering as her spine and when she speaks in that slow, deliberate manner, I find myself motioning for her to speed it up, cut to the chase – SPIT IT OUT! – not because I’m ever even remotely interested in what she has to say, but because I want her to finish. I just want it to be over. 259 days and counting.

That’s one of the more vacuous statements I’ve ever read. Define “substance.” She raised a family. She was a teacher. That’s not “substance?”

    “Set the women’s movement back…” Puh-lease.

  2. Dominique says:

Not really. Not for someone in her position. She could have made great changes. She could have done great things. She could have used her power and influence to make a real difference. Instead, she was happy to be a wallflower.

Interesting that you would launch a “nasty personal attack” (your words in another thread… the one where you criticize Obama supporters for the ville manner in which they attack HRC) on Laura Bush for actually “having an opinion”. I was, however, sprung when I substituted you for Laura B. in the pumps, pearls and form-fitting wool dress fantasy.

Incidentally, I agree wholeheartedly with your Obama vs Clinton campaign assessments, and how he’s gotten a virtual pass on this hypocrisy from the media.

I’ll add “every man” to the list of things you don’t know much about. I have known literally thousands of men in my life; not one of them has ever expressed this as “a dream.” Hint: Except for a few with anal-retentive issues, most men I know barely know what a vacuum cleaner does. Most couldn’t care less how often their house is vacuumed.

“She is weak, vapid, and meek.”

Here we go again. Weakness and meekness seem to be the character traits you disdain the most. This is an ugly attitude in men, so don’t think I”m being sexist when I say it’s exactly what turns this Obama supporter off when it comes to Hillary.

  5. Hube says:

Dom: She wasn’t elected. George was. She’s done pretty much what any other first lady has done throughout history.

Your statement reminds me of Martin Sheen telling off his son Charlie in “Wall Street”: “You’d measure a man’s worth by the size of his WALLET??”

  6. Hube says:

    Here’s Laura’s bio.

Nothing of substance in her life?

she earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Southern Methodist University in 1968. She taught in public schools in Dallas and Houston. In 1973, she earned a master of library science degree from the University of Texas and worked as a public school librarian.

Have YOU done that much “nothing” in your life, Dom?

  7. Dominique says:

Wow! I had no idea she had gone to college and worked as a librarian! Never mind. She’s an inspiration to all women!

  8. Hube says:

    And a teacher, too, Dom.

What have YOU done w/your life, Dom, that is such an “inspiration,” hmm?

  9. Al Mascitti says:

Hube: You’ll make more headway w/dominique if you explain the “toughness” required to teach in the public schools…

I have accomplished absolutely nothing in my life. I am a miserable failure. If only I could aspire to greatness like Laura Bush. Oh, the mountains I could move.

I just love the DWA family. If you don’t agree with the post, you attack the author. That’s not lame at all.

  11. Al Mascitti says:

What you’re learning is that blogging reveals more about you that you might realize when you post. Your obsession with toughness and power, for example. Sorry to focus on that, but it’s a lot more interesting than reading you restate your position on Obama ad infinitum.

  12. Dominique says:

…he said, in a post that mentioned neither candidate.

I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I keep posting about the Democratic primary candidates in an election year on a left-wing blog. Maybe my crazy obsession with toughness and power is blinding me to what I really should be writing about. And here I thought it was supposed to be about what was on my mind. Huh.

  13. Al Mascitti says:

I agree. In a post that mentioned neither candidate, your complaint about Laura Bush is that she is “weak” and “meek,” very similar to your complaint about Barack Obama as a candidate. At least those are arguably traits a candidate should have; why you’d insist on them in a First Lady is beyond me, other than as an explanation of why you admire Hillary so much.

  14. Dominique says:

I think you’re reading a little too deeply into my post. I have never liked Laura Bush. This has nothing to do with Hillary or Barack.

I do not respect weak, meek people. I don’t necessarily dislike them, I just don’t respect them. I’m not ashamed of that. It doesn’t make me power-hungry or angry or bitter. I simply respect and admire people who are brave enough to to stand up for themselves, overcome adversity and/or state an opinion - even if I don’t agree with them. Take you, for instance. I hardly ever agree with you, but I have a great deal of respect you for standing by your beliefs (as crazy as they may be). If we met in person, I’d probably like you and I’m quite certain you’d like me (everyone does…seriously, ask around).

To be honest, I have an especially hard time with weak women. I think it plays into a very damaging stereotype that women have made great strides to almost overcome. I can’t tell you how many women I’ve known over the years who share a brain with their boyfriend/husband and who completely fall apart when they’re alone. Maybe you have to be a woman to understand how annoying it is to listen to a woman constantly cry about being mistreated rather than have the strength to stand up and take care of herself.

As far as weak men, I have no problem with them unless they’re in charge of something.

Tell me honestly - how would you feel if you worked for a man (or a woman) you thought was spineless?

  15. jen says:

Wait a minute. The issue is not Mrs. Bush. The issue is the ridiculous statement she made about the government of Myanmar’s lack of response to a weather tragedy. Does no one else see the irony here? Does anyone remember Katrina and Brownie and FEMA and floods and inactivity and death and the destruction of a great part of one of America’s most fab cities? Screw Laura Bush. Who cares about Laura and her helmet hair passivity?

  16. Paul says:

Laura and Jenna just published a Book.

    New in Children’s Books
Tyrone, a reluctant reader, discovers the joy of books in

    Read All About It!

by Laura Bush and Jenna Bush.

  17. Dominique says:

Exactly, Jen! That’s what I meant when I said she should know. I’m glad at least one person picked up on it. :)

  18. Paula Gropp says:

Dominique - referencing your post at #14: “I simply respect and admire people who are brave enough to to stand up for themselves, overcome adversity and/or state an opinion - even if I don’t agree with them.”

Gee, I don’t recall feelling the love from you when I stated my opinion about Hillary staying with Bill through all his cheating and lying. You put that down to “personal reasons,” while I believe it is a character flaw, for personal and political gain. I certainly didn’t feel respected or admired by you in your responses.

Hillary has the most negative polling going into this election from all the past antics by both her and Bill. And you’re villifying Laura Bush for being a gracious First Lady? Wow. Just wow.

Would you prefer that she lie about the whereabouts of files from her previous employment? That she fire the travel department and replace them with her appointees? Have a mouth like a sailor? Stay with her husband while he preyed on other women so she could move to a state that would elect her as Senator and have a shot at President? Would you have more respect for her then?

I bet you would. That is why liberals scare me.

  19. Mike Matthews says:

    More than the terrorists, Paula?

  20. Dominique says:

    Paula -

Thank you so much for once again providing me with a list of Hillary’s sins. Turns out she’s a politician. Wow. Who knew? Did I misread, or did you actually list “having a mouth like a sailor” as one of her shortcomings? Why? Because women are supposed to be demure and quiet and polite? Now I see why you like Suzy Emptyskull so much.

I’m not a liberal (not that there’s anything wrong with them). I am a centrist. That said, it’s absolutely laughable to hear that a republican is scared of liberals after the bloody ass-fuck the so-called conservatives have given our country over the past seven years.

Sorry for the potty mouth. But not really.

PS - I obviously don’t agree with you, but I do respect you for standing up for your beliefs (regardless of the tone of my posts).
