Delaware Politics - Paul Clark

I met him briefly at the YDM party.  Seems like a nice enough guy.  Am I wrong?

BTW, what exactly is his position/job/title?

  2. jason330 says:

Clark flunked my political litmus test the first time I met him and has done nothing to redeem himself.

I asked him what he thought the “Democratic approach” to being the New Castle County President” and he said that he didn;t think that there was a Democratic approach to a job like that.

BTW - that question has been a great tool for predicting how a person will perfom in office.

  3. amie says:

He’s a tool. My only personal interactions with him came when he was the store manager of Boscovs. I had a few friends and family members that worked with him.

I won’t get into the fact that his wife is who she is so he shouldn’t be doing what he is doing because I don’t know all of the specifics….

But, IMHO - Paul Clark = Tool (easy enough equation)

  4. littlebirdietoleme says:

grand tool of the developers with much support from his developer supporting wife. this guy has to go! nice doesnt cut it!

  5. anonymous says:

Never met Mr. Clark, but he has one hot looking assistant.

  6. Dana Garrett says:

“I asked him what he thought the “Democratic approach” to being the New Castle County President” and he said that he didn;t think that there was a Democratic approach to a job like that.”

What would be the answer to that question, Jason? And how would it differ from a Republican’s approach/answer?

  7. No True Identity Wanted says:

“Paul Clarke is a tool”….interesting that the Wilmington City Committe, Exec. Board endorsed him the other night. Birds of a feather…….

As to his anything but charming wife, Pamela Scott, it boggles the mind how when questioned they insisted there is never any ‘pillow talk’ about their respective roles in government/development. This is one of the instances when I’m tempted to call ‘the voter’ stupid.

The #1 reason not to vote for him, leaving his wife out of the equation, is he has dirty developers on one hip and dirty Dems on the other.

  8. Bad Listener says:

Paul Clark has ties to the Gordon/Freeberry administration. He is not particularly intelligent, nor is he ethical. I’ll gladly vote for any other reasonable candidate in the coming election.

  9. No True Identity Wanted says:

Voters: Remember just because a candidate has no oponent you do not have to vote for the only name there….you can write in (ask before you go into the voting booth..many dept.elec. workers are short on fact/mechanisms, etc..Look out next election cycle if a candidate proves weak…his/her political enemies will be filing for the seat.

Or you can just skip the position. For instance it appears Clarke will not have a primary and the Reps. may not have a candidate for NCCC Prez.

You do not have to hold your nose and vote for Clark….all those ‘not voting’ numbers are tallied by the respective parties….it sends a message to the candidate: if you do not have a choice we do not have to vote for you.

Note to Broadcasters: Please start making this point as Mayor Baker (not counting Bovell) will not have opposition and, among others, many city & county councilmembers will not have opposition. (e.g. if 60% of voters from some representative district come out to vote but only 10% (morons) vote for an unchallenged candidate…this sends a very strong message to the bullies, thugs, mugs, and bugs in politics.

There’s more than one way to skin a rat.

    Dana -

I can tell you how Matt Denn replied when I first met him and asked him the same question.

He said that the Democratic approach, and indeed his approach to Ins Commish job, would be to look out for the little guy.

Rich people and corporations have the money and time to protect themselves from falling through the cracks or being trampled by the system, but working people have a lot on their plate just getting by.

And that is how he ran the office.

  11. amie says:

I worked with Matt Denn and thought not only was he an excellent attorney, he was a pretty great guy who never lost sight of the little guy. I think that if there were more people in politics who had that mentality… and the courage to say no to the lobbyists/special interests/political adgendas of the few & powerful…we wouldn’t need threads like these.

    Heeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllloooooooooo?????

  13. Anonomous says:

I would take a good look at his campaign contributions and how much it is funded by developers that routinely have business (development plans) before New Castle County (some represented land use attorney and his wife - Pam Scott).

He is at best the “Gene Reed of NCC Council”, who takes lots of money from those he has responsibility and oversight over (developers, engineers, land use attorneys, etc). Perhaps legal, but morally wrong.

He is at times a nice guy, but very intolerant of dissenting views, especially from citizens.

He seems nice enough as a person, but lacks a moral compass. He honestly does not believe there is an ethical conflict for him with his wife and/or the developers in their social network that fund him.

He skirts the legality of the ethics code, even know the code only covers legal moralism (the very minimal legal restrictions for really bad conflicts).

I wish there was another option this election, as NCC government desperately needs some ethical leadership. They have not recovered from the decades of corruption (Mel Slawick, Harry Roberts, Chris Roberts, Sherry Freeberry, Tom Gorden, etc.,etc, etc), and public confidence is low due to the borderline unethical behavior.

New Castle County Council is a train wreck that really needs a leader with a strong moral compass.

  14. Dana Garrett says:

    Jason, Amiee,

I agree w/ you 100% about Matt Denn. He is a superior public servant in every way. Approachable, smart, a real advocate for the little guy. My only beef is that he’s stepping down from Insurance Commissioner to be Lt. Gov. in my view.

In any case, I’m voting for him. He’s one of the best votes a Delawarean can make in 08.

  15. Nancy Willing says:

Dom, Clark is NCC at-large Council President. I have some choice posts but am going to wait until I am over this chest infection before I try to think out my comments.

Wow. Great job. Nice post. Well done.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Hi, I know nothing about anyone. Tell me about them!

This is going to be a long two weeks.

It’s like Humor-A-Retard Week over here.

  17. Nancy Willing says:

Here goes the first one:EThics 101

    -
Councilman John Cartier (D-Penny Hill) requested that council rules be suspended to allow him to introduce a resolution reappointing Eugene McCoy to the commission.
That move angered Council President Paul Clark, also a Democrat, who blasted Cartier for not following proper procedure and waiting for the resolution to be properly introduced two weeks in advance of the vote.
Clark said he was in the process of working behind the scenes to ensure all reappointments were being done in accordance to county law, and said he had verbally committed to Cartier to place McCoy’s reappointment on the council’s agenda in the coming weeks.
    -
But Cartier said he doesn’t buy it. Cartier said he believed Clark was simply trying to stall the reappointment because Clark had philosophical differences with the way McCoy believed the county’s ethics code should be enforced.
“I requested the legislation be placed on the agenda and he chose not to put it there,” he said. “It’s as simple as that.”
    -
Clark admitted that he initially opposed McCoy’s reappointment, but said he was leaning towards ultimately supporting it after D’Alessandro withdrew from consideration.
“I was not a supporter of McCoy,” he said. “I think he takes the approach that there are ethics violators everywhere. I haven’t agreed with him on a number of votes.”
In response, McCoy noted that all but one of the commission’s decisions since 2002 have been unanimous.
“I don’t see where I’ve done anything different from the others,” he said.
Clark denied that his opposition to McCoy had anything to do with a 2006 decision by the ethics commission to censure him for voting on a rezoning for a church being represented by his wife Pam Scott, a land use attorney.

  18. Dominique says:

    James -

First, I developed Humor-A-Retard Week with you in mind. I even made the posts short and easy to follow so you wouldn’t get too overwhelmed.

Second, nobody’s got a gun to your head, asshat. Feel free to visit some other worthy blog, or, here’s an idea - start your own.

Third, if you weren’t completely brain-dead, you probably would have noticed that the posts have generated quite a bit of conversation. That’s kind of the point of a blog.

    Now run along.

  19. jason330 says:

FWIW I’m enjoying the series. Of course, I am a big fan of my own observations. Shocker!

  20. jj says:

Jason, I really like your Litmus test. Your test is short , and in makes them think fast. Now Please, don’t take this as if this is a trick queation.Or if I’am a smart ass. I really would love to knoe if you ever asked Chris Coons your litmus test question ?

  21. Observer says:

I have met Paul on several occasions have come to like him. I spent about 15 minutes tonight with him discussing the Renaissance of Claymont and his efforts to make this happen. He is a concerned, thoughful and active Council President. He gets my vote.

  22. snark says:

“New Castle County Council is a train wreck”

this is the reason most of the crooks on county council will be unapposed. Good people don’t want to get involved. Every potential candidate thinks to him/herself:
“do I want to be the only honest person on that council, get slimed by that band of crooks at every meeting for the next 4 years?

  23. Henery Clay says:

Paul Clark You Must mean Mr. Pam Scott.
