The rumors are true

Yeah, yeah. Apparently someone at WDEL found out I got a super-hot interview with Lt. Gov. John Carney last night. As Allan Loudell has reported, the Carney campaign seems to be resistant to interview requests with eminent domain being the subject. Good thing I was lazily relaxing at home last night and was able to take Mr. Carney up on his offer for a “free” meal and some political chat.

Anyhow, WDEL wants me in ways that no one can imagine. I’ll be on with Rick Jensen from 1-4 today. Stream it here.

I agree with what Tyler Nixon said on the other thread - I think it says a lot about Carney that he even spoke to you on this issue.

Lets be honest (can we agree on the following?):

    * You very clearly support Carney’s opponent in the upcoming primary.
    * You do not want Carney to win.
    * In light of the two points above, you’re probably not inclined to be objective in what you write.
    * You have said some downright nasty things about the man in the past, and taken a few cheap shots.

All that being said, the easiest thing for Carney to have done on this issue was to avoid you. He didn’t. He took a fair amount of time with both you and another blogger the previous evening to try and explain his position on the issue.

You may not like his position… You may not even like how he stated it… But you have to acknowledge that he took the time to try and explain to you where he was coming from.

I think that says a lot about him as a person.

  2. Mike Matthews says:

    ActiveX,

Agreed 100% and I intend to mention just that on air.

  3. Allan Loudell says:

The Carney Campaign has scheduled the Lieutenant-Governor on-the-air with me at @ 4:35 p.m. today (Wednesday) during the “WDEL Delaware Afternoon News”.

Thanks for “smokin’ him out’ (if that’s what it was!); it’s also possible that Carney, as Lieutenant-Governor, just was too busy to schedule live radio telephone interviews on the legislative session’s final day, and needed some of Tuesday to recuperate (Certainly that’s happened with other Delaware politicians I’ve interviewed over the years!).

Unfortunately, my news format is NOT as elastic as a telephone-talk show, but I’ll try to cram in as many questions as I can without too many interruptions!

    Allan Loudell

  4. Mike Matthews says:

    Allan,

You are THE god of news talk in Delaware. Good on the lieutenant governor for deciding to speak with you. You’ll do the news as its meant to be done. I’ll simply provide the comedy.

  5. Al Mascitti says:

I was told the Carney people asked you to leave, and the interview took place only after you pointed out it was open to the public and they couldn’t throw you out. True?

  6. Al Mascitti says:

ActiveX (the latest Carney sock puppet name): Your post illustrates perfectly the viewpoint Markell supporters are working against — namely, rejoice that this elected official deigned to talk to someone who disagreed with him!

    You people make me sick.

  7. Monica Blue says:

Droppin’ deuces on WDEL! Can’t think of a more appropriate spot.

  8. ActiveX says:

    Al -

I’m actually not decided yet on who I will support.

I must admit I do find your comments a little troubling for someone who is supposed be a member of the media elite (laughing really, really hard while I’m writing this).

But seriously, the point I was trying to make wasn’t that Mike or anyone else had to agree with Carney, or even like him.

I was simply pointing out that he took steps to talk to multiple people who actively contribute content to blog sites that support his opponent. He didn’t have to do that, and in fact his life (in the short term) might have been made easier by avoiding them.

I’ve got no bone to pick with Markell, but I am coming up empty with an example of him doing something similar.

Everyone likes talking to people that like them and agree with their ideas — especially politicians. What I think is interesting in this case is that Carney went out of his way to talk with people who not only don’t like him but have actually taken some cheap shots at him in the past.

Its an interesting indication of a persons character.

Actually not all that surprised that you missed something that subtle.

  9. Intercourse says:

Gotta’ agree with Al that the hero-worshipping demanded by the current leaders of both the GOP and Dems, and the fan-club attitude expressed by ActiveX is disgusting.

Carney is a political machine. He would ignore Matthews and the rest of the bloggers if he thought he could get away with it. The interview is simply an attempt to gain the votes the bloggers represent.

Is the same true of Markell? He’s a politician too. However, his past experience and brains and lack of connection and ‘debts’ to the worst administration in Delaware’s history make him a better choice than Carney.

  10. LiberalGeek says:

As “the other blogger” that got an interview, Let me disagree with Intercourse and Al. There was absolutely no resistance to talking to me. On the contrary, he was busy as hell on Monday night and he took a good deal of time to talk to me.

I’m not saying that this excuses his position, which I disagree with, but the only other politician that I had that kind of time with that night was John Kowalko, who is the most blogger-friendly politician in the state.

  11. DanaGarrett says:

    Mike,

Great job on the radio today. You are a natural.

  12. liz allen says:

John Kowalko the absolute best representative for the people in the State of Delaware. Carney is a political hack, I hope Markell kicks him to the curb in the primary. Minner and Carney attached at the hip. You want to continue the Delaware Way then Carney is your man. You want to change things in Dover, elect someone who is accessible…Markell.

  13. table lamp says:

Markell is accessible as long as he wants something from you. As soon as he gets it he’s gone. I actually feel bad for all of you who haven’t had that experience yet and therefore think he is your buddy. Wait and see.

  14. Mike Matthews says:

    Lamp,

Send me an email. I’d like to talk to you offline. Aside from your handle, you’ve piqued my interest!

    downwithabsolutes@gmail.com

  15. Observer says:

    Great job Mike!

  16. Rule of Hand says:

Liz- are you even aware of what you are talking about with Minner/Carney attached at the hip? Are you familiar with the idea that ANY Lt. Governor does not write, sign, or vote on any legislation? Do you really think the Governor asks Carney opinion on what her administration is planning on doing? If he is such a hack as you say he is, why would Markell be any different working with both sides? You think as Governor he will continue to be that accessible to you?

  17. Al Mascitti says:

Oh, for crying out loud — can’t John Carney’s single internet fan come up with one handle and stick with it?

ActiveX: If that’s your idea of subtle, no wonder you’re supporting Carney.

  18. Kilroy says:

    SOON VERY SOON

  19. Rule of Hand says:

Here’s a thought there is more than one…

  20. table lamp says:

    To Al Mascitti:

Believe it or not, but there are many people who support John Carney. I believe that you are in the Markell minority which is why you are getting so huffy and hurling accusations about my identity.

Aren’t you a former journalist? I would think your training would make you think and, oh possibly research, a statement before you put it in writing.

And furthermore, it’s an insult to ActiveX that you think my ramblings are even close to his/her well-thought out comments.

  21. Kilroy says:

    table lamp says:
“Believe it or not, but there are many people who support John Carney. I believe that you are in the Markell minority which is why you are getting so huffy and hurling accusations about my identity.”

You are absolutely correct! I’ve been known to poke at Carney because once he announced his candidacy he wasn’t coming out from Minner shadow. Minner is her own beast and Carney in no way could control her agenda. She didn’t run for office to be Carney’s puppet however all the years he stood back and let people think he was her puppet didn’t do him justice.

Face it all candidates from all sides claim to have the save the world plan for every issue.
Markell pumps $700,000.00 of his own money in his campaign then add it to the legitimate supporter contribution including his buddy Ship from Rodel as security to advance Vision 2015 then proclaims the world loves him.

Markell’s current radio ad campaign is lame as all hell! “ Jack Markell wrote a book”
Wow, give everybody a cookie ! Come see Jack during his 57 town visit ! Does he think he is Tom Cruise that everybody is going to drop what they are doing! My God Jack get a grip, add some passion to your campaign! That is the difference between Carney and Markell, Carney has more sincere passion! Markell has passion to win and Carney has sincere passion for wanting to meet the needs of the people! Shit, I might jump ship and support him! My dislike of democrats goes back to my dislike of pecker-head Carper who signed the DSTP legislation.

If democrats don’t like Republicans they are in for a big surprise because Markell is the closest democrat to being a Republican. Carney will win the primary without a doubt and the republicans are going to go, O Shit!

  22. Kilroy says:

Ok folks it’s done! I gave notice that I am leaving the Republican Party to support the Democrats. see Kilroy’s Independence !
