Delaware Politics - Chris Coons

OMG, this was a great idea. I can’t believe all of the stuff I’m learning in the Tom Gordon thread. It’s like a little local soap opera!

OK, so I’ve heard Chris Coons’ name bandied about pretty frequently and it’s either rave reviews or rabid ranting. I don’t think I’ve met anyone who’s completely indifferent about him. So, is he awesome or awful? I’m counting on you bloggers to give me the real scoop.

Go…

Coons is a super smart boy scout.

He was a double major at Amherst College (Chemistry and Political Science) where he won a Truman Scholarship as a junior.

He got his law degree degree from Yale Law School, and a Master’s degree in Ethics from Yale Divinity School. I don’t know if it was concurent. He also speaks Swahili.

I would have loved to see him run against Castle. My sense is that he may be too ethical to go very far in politics.

  2. jason330 says:

What do I mean by that?

NCC government is a cesspool. I suspect some buckets of slime will be tossed around in this thread. He should have skipped it and taken on Castle.

  3. snark says:

He’s a brite boy, but “too ethical”? He turned a blind eye and said nothing while Gordonberry ran roughshod over the county.

  4. Truth Teller says:

All one has to do is disreguard the BS about Tom and remember how good things were for the 8 years he served without raising taxes. Great parks and libarys

  5. Wilmington Gazette says:

Coons raised taxes at a time with a depression in the value of the real estate market, record high electricity and natural gas prices from Delmarva Power, the sub prime foreclosure crisis, record high gasoline prices, record high wheat and food prices. And the list goes on. If the guy has so many degrees and is such the brain why did he raise property taxes? Has anyone noticed all of the for sale signs in Brandywine 100 and the signs stay up for more than a year or not sell at all? Have you seen the ones with the grass a foot tall looking like they are abandoned? Thanks Coons for adding and additional burden on the tax payers of NCC during the worst economic trying times in my memory! Bill Clinton coined the phrase: “It’s the economy stupid!”. I guess Mr. Yale Chris Coons didn’t get what the meaning of stupid is!

  6. jen says:

Librarians loathe Gordon. I like librarians. Enough said. The buildings may be grand and getting grander–about time–but the system sucks and the librarians have suffered enough.

  7. jason330 says:

I hope that the good people of NCC are no so stupid that they fall for the “gordon did not raise taxes” strategy.

    We’ll see I guess.

  8. Nancy Willing says:

I am going to stick with the ‘Gordon brought us the UDC and Coons is poised to kill it’ strategy.

  9. Anon999 says:

The stupid people of NCC who have to sell their homes and move to Florida because they cannot pay their heating bill and Chris Coons tax hikes expecially those on fixed incomes may or may not get a chance to vote in this election. Well, there is always the absentee ballot!

Truth Teller says: “All one has to do is disreguard the BS about Tom and remember how good things were for the 8 years he served without raising taxes. Great parks and libarys”

I invite anyone to read my post on the Gordon thread and make them go away by defending them individually rather than waving them away as “BS about Tom.”

Never forget this quote from the tapes made of Tom and Sherry: He couldn’t fire her, he said, because “she’s got too much shit on me.”

I guess he forgot to say “bull” in front of “shit,” eh, TT?

  11. GWB says:

Al, the same could be said of people you have worked for at the News Journal, and a lot of other work places.
I read your comment on the last post to Nancy…How was your Off the web talk about what you know about gordon??? Your such a fat little child. Just like your friend Chris Coons.
    * Ton Gordon gave us alot!
Coons has taken alot away from us . Including the poor !!

  12. Al Mascitti says:

I haven’t spoken to Nancy yet, but the subject won’t be Gordon. Not that it’s any of your business.

As for your “point,” you have raised the only defense Gordon has: “Everyone else does it, too!” Rather ironic situational ethics, coming from a cop, don’t you think?

Take a hint: Defending Gordon on these boards will lead to a similar response from me every time. If you want to try to hoodwink the electorate, you’d better peddle your snake oil somewhere else.

  13. Whatever says:

Alright Al — we all know you hate Tom. This is a point that I will have to disagree with — I think he did a good job for the County and was fair to the citizens and taxpayers and you don’t. OK that is the great thing about a democracy. However — Please tell me something that Coons has done? He is arrogant, aloof, superior — pleae feel free to fill in the blanks. Just one thing he has done? He paid off Cephias to get the “black” vote, hired his political cronies in high paying jobs that then raped the pension system, had a CAO that would show up drunk on police scenes and berate the officers —- finally and worst has continually gutted the UDC in an effort to advance land use issues for his families company—– so just one thing please?

  14. Al Mascitti says:

You haven’t seen me say one word of support for Coons in this or the other thread. Not one. Find someone else to defend him.

“we all know you hate Tom. This is a point that I will have to disagree with — I think he did a good job for the County and was fair to the citizens and taxpayers and you don’t.”

I have listed, under the other header, a long list of what Tom Gordon has done. Not once have I said that I “hate” him. Not once have you spelled out anything we couldn’t find in one of those 268-page opuses to the Great Man, many of which are misleading.

Too bad all the Coons watchdogs lost their voices during the Gordon years. I’m not very impressed by all the belated barking at Coons.

  15. GWB says:

Al, Re: talking to Nancy. I only asked due to the fact YOU asked her to talk Off Line about Tom in yesterdays comments in the post about Tom Gordon.
I did not say everyone else does it. ( a boss weo can’t fire someone )What I ment was there are lots of people who would love to fire someone that workes for them. But they don’ want to take the chance because that person could make work life hard for them. IT HAPPEND ALL THE TIME. yOU MAY HAVE FELT THAT WAY AT THE WNJ. thats all

I’am sure you’ll defend Chris Coons every chance you get.

    Why???

Chris Coons is well known to repay those who defend him. Whth overpaid jobs on the taxpayers
tab. You will fit in just perfect.
AS to hoodwinking the election. Please AlI think you overdoing it. But Chris likes that.

  16. Al Mascitti says:

Give me a break. Nobody I’ve ever known failed to fire a person because that person “has too much shit on them.” I don’t know where you work.

Attacking Tom Gordon doesn’t equate to defending Chris Coons — except in the minds of bootlicking Gordon loyalists. Are you one of those?

You’ll notice I haven’t defended Coons yet, so you’re already wrong.

I did not say I would talk to her about Tom. Find me the quote; you can’t, because it doesn’t exist.

  17. GWB says:

Al go to yesterdays post, ” Tom Gordon ” your comment #36

  18. GWB says:

Al, I’am not a hoodwinked Gordon loyalists. Rather I’am someone who would like to see ther County spend their money in a fair fashon all across the county. Gordon started it then Coons put all the money in North Wilmington, and Hockessin.
I would like to someone start spending our money in a fair = way. Coons has failed in a big way.

  19. Al Mascitti says:

GWB: As I have written elsewhere, I consider Coons a disappointment. I would not endorse him, if I were the sort of person who got to walk around endorsing people. Almost all of the negative stuff people have said in these threads is true and/or reason to give pause before pushing the Coons button in the voting booth.

But do I consider him the better choice in the Democratic primary? Yes, because Gordon has proved himself untrustworthy. And I realize the GOP has nobody running for the office.

  20. GWB says:

And Chris Coons is truthworthy??At least Gordon was fair in planning and spendinf money for the good of all the people ofNCC>….incluiding the poor and lowincome who get nothing for all the tax$ they pay.Thats my point. So in the sprit of being fair to those who don’t have much getting more please join me in voting for Tom Gordon.

  21. Al Mascitti says:

    “And Chris Coons is truthworthy??”

More so than Gordon, yes. I base this on how truthful each has been with me over the years. It isn’t a close contest.

“At least Gordon was fair in planning and spendinf money for the good of all the people ofNCC>….incluiding the poor and lowincome who get nothing for all the tax$ they pay.Thats my point. So in the sprit of being fair to those who don’t have much getting more please join me in voting for Tom Gordon.”

I have no idea what you’re talking about. And in the spirit of being fair, the poor and low income pay very, very little in county taxes.

  22. GWB says:

The poor pay little in taxes? You sound like a snob from Centerville.
The poor don’t deserve The nice parks , libr. with computers for homework. likthe 20+ computers at the Hockessin ?
Al to be fair, you don”t look into Chris like you did on Gordon. You’ve had tips about some of the stuff Chris Coons had done….dirty stuff. you’ve choose to NOT to look into them

    You just really hate Gordon.

  23. Al Mascitti says:

Try to pay attention, GWB: County taxes are property taxes. Most poor people don’t own their homes, and so pay this only indirectly. Those who do have homes with low property values, and hence pay low taxes. What part of that don’t you understand? By the way, I’m not looking down on you because you’re poor; I’m looking down on you because you’re acting incredibly dense.

You’re right, I don’t look into the Coons administration, because I just don’t care anymore. As I said, six years was enough. I don’t owe you, Tom Gordon or anyone else “looking into” anything. It’s not an investigative talk show. Anyone who wants to look into the Coons administration is free to do so. I looked into Gordon’s, and I’m reporting what I know.

I don’t understand why it’s “personal” that I remember all this crap and brought it up on a thread in which Dominique asked about his background. I didn’t even chime in until a couple of blockheads started singing his praises.

If Tom Gordon and those who support him for public office again don’t like hearing about it, perhaps they should have though beforehand what this would look like in the papers.

I have no interest in dredging up any of this. But as long as Tom Gordon persists in forcing himself on the public, I’ll be there to remind everybody what he did.

  24. Whatever says:

Oh I love how Al says its not personal but then quickly calls anyone who supports Gordon “blockheads.” So — those who disagree with you and think that Gordon is a better choice than Coons and in his 8 years did some pretty good things are “blockheads.” The truth is that I have no problem with you expressing your opinion but you are a bully to anyone who dissents — that makes it personal to you.

  25. Al Mascitti says:

Sorry if I offended you, MR. Blockhead. Maybe if you spent more time here you’d get a better sense of the general atmosphere. Then again, isn’t is funny how many names we’ve never seen before show up to talk when Gordon and Freebery are the subject. The return of the flying monkeys.

If I wanted to get personal I would talk about Mr. Gordon’s personal life or insult him (I use “sleazy” in regard to these politicians as a catch-all term for practices that won’t get anyone tossed in jail, but aren’t found in the Good Government handbook). It is nothing but professional, that is, I write here only about Gordon’s actions as a public servant. I only bring up his relationship with Freebery because public money was spent to keep it silent; indeed, if the relationship had been known at the time of Freebery’s hiring by Gordon, it clearly would have raised serious ethical flags. Yet another thing the Gordon apologists would have us ignore.

I’m sorry if you feel bullied; I guess I would, too, if all I had to go on was the sense that he’s a nice guy. If you want to vote for him, go ahead.

  26. Al Mascitti says:

For those who don’t care about the details, here’s an important point to all this Gordon chatter: Isn’t it amazing how many “people” have shown up to sing his praises? And all new names, too.

The Gordonberry loyalists have been practicing sock puppetry since before people even called it that. They have always tried to manufacture the illusion of popular support, usually by getting known friends and relatives to write letters to the editor. The News Journal editorial board was so deep in the bag for these two that they once printed a letter from Freebery’s adult son — without identifying him as such.

  27. amie says:

was this before or after the hit & run?

  28. Al Mascitti says:

Long after, I believe, but I don’t recall the date of the alleged hit and run. His letter ran during the back-and-forth about the federal charges.

  29. GWB says:

Ok AL back to the taxes. So if you rent and are poor or low income = they don deserve the same as homeowners in Centerville or Hockessin? Thats what your saying! You really are a fucking Ass hole.

  30. Al Mascitti says:

Try — try really, really hard this time — to understand what I said: the poor and low income don’t pay much in property taxes. There’s nothing in that sentence about what they “deserve.” Stop attacking me and try understanding the point. You’re giving poor people a bad name here; they’re not all as dumb as you.

  31. Al Mascitti says:

On the other hand, most Gordon supporters ARE as dumb as you.

  32. Nancy Willing says:

There is a bit of a conflict here Al:

More so than Gordon, yes. I base this on how truthful each has been with me over the years. It isn’t a close contest.

    And

You’re right, I don’t look into the Coons administration, because I just don’t care anymore.

  33. Al Mascitti says:

I said “truthful with me,” not “truthful with voters.” It’s true I have met and spoken with Gordon more often than with Coons, but that alone doesn’t account for the disparity. But if your point is that I haven’t spent much time looking for potential untruthfulness, that’s true.

I have tried to make clear my motives here, though I have been attacked based on false ones. My goal is to make sure that people remember Gordon’s true record — all of it, not just the part a candidate running for office wants you to hear.

[…] What I’m listening to As many of you know, I’ve written extensively about my favorite male artist, former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. I’ve been following his career for nearly a decade and I’ve reveled in the release of each new record, as too infrequent it may be. His last record, 2004’s Grown Backwards was an elegant, expansive taste of pop music. From the devastatingly gorgeous melody of Glass, Concrete, and Stone, to the funk of what could have been a Talking Heads leftover, Dialog Box, the album was stunning in its effortless blend of styles (Byrne even tackled two arias for the record!).
